JUST
A BRIEF NOTE on the film A Quiet Place. It's a horror film with strange
alpha predators who seem to have decimated much of the world. These creatures
(we never know the backstory) hunt by sound and are large, fast and extremely
powerful. The characters spend much of the film in silence, speaking to each
other in sign language, and everyone is careful not to make any wayward sounds
that might attract the creatures, who have hypersensitive hearing. It is a
story about a family as they struggle to survive in a rural setting, but it is
also a rich examination of parental love and care that makes the film so
rewarding to watch. I will admit there is one scene that caused even these old
tear ducts of mine to moisten (a little bit!). For a horror film to have such
moments of tenderness and pathos is a pleasant surprise, and a relief from the unrelenting sturm und drang found in most films
of the genre these days.
Cheers, Jake.
